What is PVC?
First commercially produced in the late 1920s, polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, became one of the most widely used polymers in the world. Due to its versatility, PVC is used in a wide variety of industrial, technical and everyday applications, from window profiles and pipes to cables and life-saving medical devices.
PVC has always been regarded as a resource efficient material. The polymer is made from 57% chlorine and only 43% oil or natural gas. The chlorine portion is derived from common salt, which is abundant. PVC is also highly durable and energy efficient in a number of applications that ensure efficient use of raw materials and prevent unnecessary consumption of natural resources.
Looking through its life cycle, PVC is highly competitive in terms of its environmental impact. Recent eco-efficiency and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies on the most common applications show that in terms of energy requirements and GWP (Global Warming Potential), PVC is at least equal to alternative products. In most cases, it shows advantages in terms of both total energy consumption and low CO2 emissions. A unique advantage of PVC over other materials is the possibility of changing the formulation, increasing the safety and eco-efficiency of the final product, while maintaining the same technical performance.
Advantage of Using PVC
PVC wastes can be collected and recycled like paper and glass wastes. The international recycling code is determined as 3.
